Wherein everyone throws their dead Christmas tree on their Subaru and drives up into the National Forest for a bonfire. The collapsible roof rack is still one of my favorite features of this car 5+ years after buying it.

My parent’s just went a few dozen feet back into the woods (a plus of living in a forest). Last year some lady with goats came and grabbed it for them to eat, but it seems she’s decided that it’s not worth the effort.

When I was a kid we used to collect all the trees in our village, dragging them behind our bikes with a rope. The kid that collected the most trees got to light the fire. Maybe using a Subaru instead would have helped me to gather more trees, as I never had more than 2 or 3 ;p

I preferred the side rails that I could mount my Thule bars onto. The load bars on the Subaru are curved and a bit to narrow for my taste.

I'm curious about this as well
You can tell a Finn but you can't tell him much

IIRC the cross bars fold into the side rails sort of like a pocketknife when not in use.

Maybe folding is a better word than collapsible. The cross bars fold into the side rails when not in use kind of like a pocket knife. Keeps it quiet and maybe slightly better MPG when you don’t need them and then in 30 seconds you can release the latches, swing the cross bars over and lock them in place and then you’re ready to mount a bike carrier or ski rack or roof box or whatever.

I understand. I have the factory Yakima bike rack and a Thule soft bag work well it with them, but I can see how they might be a bit flimsy for some things. Mostly they’ve been handy just to lash random things to for short trips.

I always wondered why Subaru switched to those bulky side rails. That's awesome.
